Ceramic tiles: variation of pattern, texture and shading

Many of today’s popular ceramic tiles are designed to have similar looks and feel of natural stones. It’s important for you to understand that the variation on pattern, texture and shading among different tiles pieces of the plain tiles (the same product code) are the purpose of the designer not due to the production quality or production technology. Let look at the following photo of a floor which mimics a natural stone in full size:

When the manufacturer is to decide to create the same pattern, the same tone (normally called 1 face) then the ceramic tiles pieces of the same product code of the same production lot will be similar and with shade variation. Shade variation will be noted in different leaflet or on product catalogue of that tiles. You can normally find:

(Image from left to right: V1(low) = the least amount of shade and texture variation, V2 (moderate) = Light to moderate shade and texture variation within each carton)

(Image from left to right: V3 (low) = High shade and texture variation within each carton, V4 (moderate) = Very high shade and texture variation within each carton)

After understanding all of this, you shouldn’t be wondered on openning a tiles box and find shade, texture variation among the tiles pieces. If you are not familiar to the variation, you can choose product code with low variation.

But soon you will recognize the shade variation at higher level will be more and more popular and loved by architects thanks to the aesthetic value.

Today, following the world trend the manufacturers also launch the tiles with more face (many patterns, textures for 1 product code) to adapt to the aesthetic aspect. With this direction, after installation the overall view of the wide floor have more creative look and eye-catching. Therefore, you should take time to understand all important information on ceramic tiles to choose the right one for your house.
